REAL STORIES

“Being that my roots come from Indigenous culture, I’ve been able to utilize Mother Earth and everything she’s been able to offer us. We smudge with sage to give us peace and clarity. We take tobacco and offer it to Mother Earth to look after us and our prayers. We ask the Creator to guide and protect us along our journey. And that has given me the ability to move forward from my trauma.” – Mary W.

“I am a woman of color, survivor of domestic violence, refugee claimant, single mother, internationally trained professional, ambitious, empowered entrepreneur who spent more than a decade on a waiting list for affordable housing. Some of the community services I utilized included, but not limited to, the Domestic Abuse Sexual Assault Care Centre of York Region, Women’s College Hospital, Women’s Support Network, Women Centre of York Region and YSSN. I am thrilled to be such an active part of the York Region community and I have a lot to say about people’s ability to get the services they need.” – Carleen M.
