Call Diversion Unit

YSSN’s CDU is made up of crisis workers who are stationed at a York Region Police office.

When 911 receives a call about a mental health concern that dispatchers determine does not require an immediate police response, the call is transferred to us. We then assess the situation, provide support, and follow up with the individual as needed.

How we can help

  • We divert mental health related calls from the police to community services so people can get the right support
  • We encourage you to call our 1-855-310-COPE Crisis line if you need support
Call Diversion Unit

I spoke with an 18-year-old who had discovered her dad was not her biological father, causing family conflicts and leaving her feeling lost. Through the CDU I was able to validate her experiences and share information on supportive resources. By the end, she had a plan to follow up with these resources and felt reassured she could reach out to crisis lines instead of police. She left our conversation feeling hopeful and confident that, with time, she would be okay.  ~YSSN Staff
